By E. F. Panighetti
Got this set after returning a Schlage Link set.
The profile of this unit that faces the outside of the door is comparable to regular deadbolts. The Schlage unit was too long and interfered with the storm door.
This unit is motorized; so it locks and unlocks itself; where the Schalge merely engaged / disengaged the knob for the deadbolt; so if paired with a Z-Wave controller; can lock and unlock the door on demand.
It provides full Z-Wave controls and reporting.
The keypad lights up when pressing the lock button. It works well in New England where temperatures go from sub-zero to 100s in direct sunlight.
The housing on the indoor side houses the controls and batteries. It's a bit thick like some hotel locks.
The mechanisms offers no resistance and works well with a regular key; it's not different than a regular deadbolt. On the inside you use the regular lever to lock/unlock.
The lock itself is a Kwikset SmarKey; and the re-locking pin is provided. This is great because I can re-key this myself in less than 5 minutes (Ie if you need to give guests a guest key when they just cannot figure out how to enter the numbers on the keypad :); Home Depot and other hardware stores sells inexpensive sets of pre-made keys for Kwikset; so re-keying becomes a non-issue. Just put one old working key; the re-locking pin and then the new key; lock/unlock and it's all set). Note that Baldwin are part of Kwickset; and use the same key designs.
My only complain is that it has 5 number keys instead of the normal 10; so it works best when using 6-digits or more. An 8-digit PIN provides 390625 variations; and 60-digits provide 15625 combinations.
If used without a Z-Wave controller; it can store two combinations; and; I believe; 256 combinations when used with Z-Wave
Note that there are models of the same lock without the radio controller; which s an optional card; and the controller can be either Z-Wave (Also used by FIOS or XFinity security services) or Zigbee.
The radio controller itself is a removable card behind the batteries.
The external enclosure is all metal and the satin finish is comparable to other Kwikset products. The inside is plastic painted in the same color with the top of the unit in black plastic that gives the optical impression of a smaller unit (The inside is rather large).
After returning the Schlage set; I also considered the Yale locks because these provide a full keypad; but are much larger. This is cheaper and more insconspicuous.
Installed this lock over 6 months ago and did not need to change the batteries yet. It uses 4 AA batteries.

Have 3 of these used with Vera3 and love them. Just wish the batteries lasted a BIT longer. FYI, you CAN install these without using they keypad. My wife didn't like the idea of having a keypad on our front door. There was an existing Kwikset unit on the front door and I just used the outer portion of that... internal portion screwed right into it. Can still control it via Zwave no issue. Also the Kwikset's ability to rekey on your own is really cool.

After years of a old door and crappy lock.We could not be more excited at the prospect of getting a digital lock with multi codes function for the kids.
Pros = Most of all controllable by Z Wave technology !!! Able to allow entry via phone to the UPS guy, Pet sitter, Neighbors wanting to borrow something while away and so on. Install a web cam with a speaker and you can see who just rang your bell and decide to let them in or not. How sweet is that.. !!! No more locked out kids due to loss of keys.. that alone is worth it. Rekey option on this set is easy as well....
In our case we combined it with a Kwikset lock lever that matched up very very well. Due to our outside door being brown and interior very light.. we had to buy double of everything. All in all I think it turned out very professional and modern , clean looking.
Cons
Batteries wear down very quickly if you use the auto lock function. If you use the manual then it is okay.. however to switch from auto to manual requires the removal of the interior top .. a bit of a hassle .. would have been nice to switch from auto in wk to manual on weekends when we are in and out allot.
The Venician Bronze finish (exterior in our case) does not hold up well to scratches, from rings keys etc.
The Brushed Nickle interior cover is not as show in photos .. it is not all nickle. .the interior top part you pull off to change the batteries is now black. Which I am not so fond of. As you can see with a Natural finish Oak door .. the black really stands out on the interior of the door. So the picture on the ad / site did not match what I received in the mail.. a big no no in my book.
I have long been a fan of Kwikset due to the affordability and good quality.
Not to mention their customer support is top rate.
Amazon had the best price on this item for sure. And you get it fast. Most Box Stores needed 2 wks for a Special order item such as this.
I would not recommend this set if harsh exposure to elements either heat or snow.. I do not feel it would hold up well. I have seen then at different houses and the Bronze does not look nice after about 1 yr. We have a large overhang with a canopy of trees for protection.. and out lock never sees snow or rain.
